Diet Coke and Mentos

The mini project i decided to do was the soda explosion this is an easy experiment that you can do at home...it can also be a mean trick on someone.

What you need:

1. 2 liters of soda (diet works better)

2. 1 roll of mentos

3. paper tube if u want to drop the mentos in perfectly

Cautions:

~ this experiment is very messy so don't do it indoors

First you need a flat surface that can become dirty. Undo the soda cap, unwrap your mentos, paper tube is placed for mentos to slide into soda bottle. Let the mentos slide into the soda and BAMMMM you will get to see an explosion of soda.

Science involved:

So you may be wondering what science is involved in this soda volcano well because thementos and the soda have CO2 and other ingredients when the two mix a chemical reaction occurs.

Layered Drink

For my mini project I have made a density column.You will see how an objects density affects where it stays in the glass, and doesn't mix with the other liquids.

This is the list of liquids i used while making this experiment
1. syrup
2. dish wash soap
3. water
4. vegetable oil
note: you don't need to stop at these 4 liquids you can add others!!!

First off I took the syrup and poured it in the center of the cup, you probably want to pour the syrup in the center of the cup because it is sticky and if it hits the sides your layers wont come out as neat.Next i added the dish washing soap you have to becarefull when pouring the next liquids because you don't want to pour it in the center because it might crack the layer of the liquid and cause the two liquids to mix.Then i added the rest of my liquids in the same cautious process.

Cautions:

• don't mix the liquids while pouring
• pour slowly
• don't bump the glass
• if you use water you may want to dye it with color

Science:

This project shows you how the object with the heaviest density (mass per unit volume) goes to the bottom of the glass and the less heavy objects stay toward the top of the glass. The reason why the liquids did not mix is because they repel each other and some are just to thick to mix with each other.

What is a hypothesis

a hypothesis is a proposal or guess to what will happen in an experiment and can be tested to see if true.

to make a hypothesis you need a if...then ... statment.

What is a theory

A theory is a statment made after the observations have been made and the hypothesis has been tested mulitple times and has been proven true.

So a hypothesis can be what you think will happen in an experiment and a theory is your hypothesis that was proven true it is what did happen in the experiment. The hypothesis and the theory work hand in hand you cant have one without the other you need to first make a hypothesis then prove it true to have a theory. You also need to run multiple test to ensure that no errors were made.

Mills Canyon Map

Last thursday we went on a field trip to Mills Canyon .... it took forever to get there it was all up hill and it was so hot. Even though it was hecka slippery and hot and crazy, it was fun in a weird way like it was fun to be out hiking with your friends and to see people fall. I hated that it was so slippery and muddy but that is what kinda made it feel more outdoorsy. Though this field trip was kinda weird it was weird but it a good way i guess i kinda liked it... okay okay i liked it because i got to see someone fall they got so dirty it was hillarious.

Water in cup...upsidedown!

For my mini project i decided to defy gravity with a cool chemistry trick. In this chemistry trick you fill a cup of water you put a piece of cardboard on the bottom then you flip it and the cardboard should stay in place with the water still in the cup. Sounds cool huh well this is what you will need to try this trick out for yourself.

Materials needed:

~ you need a glass of water filled to the top
~ A piece of cardboard, big enough to cover the entire lid of the cup





How to do this trick:
1. You wil need to fill the cup with water to the top
2. You place the piece of cardboard over the rim of the cup
3. make sure no air bublles are in the cup
4. hold the cardboard to the cup sturdily
5.flip the cup upside down
6. remove your hand quickly from the cardboard
Science:
Early I said that this was a chemistry trick the reason why this is a chemistry trick is becuase it shows difference in air pressure. This trick would not be possible with out the difference of air pressure in the cup and the air pressure outside the cup. The reason why the cardboard is able to stay in place while the water in the cup is pushing down on it is because the air pressure out side the cup is higher than the air pressure inside the cup.

dancing spaghetti

I heard of an experiment from one of my friends where they showed the effect of pressure on a the gas of a solid material. They called it dancing spaghetti!

Materials needed for this experiment:
1. water 4.spaghetti
2. vinegar 5. graduated cylinder
3.baking soda 6. large beaker

Safety precaution: none except for if you touch any vinegar or baking soda you probably don't want to touch your eyes so if you like you can wear goggles.

Scientific principles:

• shows the effect of the pressure of the gas on a solid material

the end of the 6 weeks

This is it we are at our final 6 weeks of the year! I am so nervous our grades are being turned in and progress reports are coming out I don't think I've done very good this progress report that means that i am so dead by my parents, but i tried as hard as i could so there is much i can do. We also just finished the book Cyrano it was really good at first it started out slowly but then it became really interesting with the love triangle going on. But the best part out of this 6 weeks being over is that spring break is finally here!! i am going to play softball over spring break,sleep and hangout with my friends

David web

This tuesday we had a guest david web he is so cool. He made learning about change in pressure alot of fun. We did alot of cool experiments, while still learning about how vacums work. I really liked how he took away the soundfrom the door bell that was so cool, I didnt know if you changed the pressure it would take away sound as well. I also liked the one when he made the marshmellow go from an already big size to an even bigger size than back to a smaller size then what we started off with. having David web come over for our long day was probably the best idea we have had all year. more blogs next week.

Half day this friday

This week we have no softball games it is really weird not to have games i inda miss it, but that is okay the real games start tuesday when we go against our rivals CAP, i hope we win them.Because we dont have any games my coach is realy working us hard im even more tired than usual but atleast we are only at school for 4 and a half days. Though we have a half day this friday we might have practice! gosh softball is so difficult lol!! And this saturday i have a car wash for one of my clubs if u have a car and you are reading this bring your car down so you can help us gain money for six flags.But what kind of blew this week for me was the Energy test on monday it was so hard i was getting like a headache there were some question that i had no clue when we learned that. I dont think i did very well on that test it was very difficult for me, but thats okay ill just have to try harder. more next week

No school Friday

Thank god there is no school this friday I am so happy that we get they day off I really do need it. The week went by really fast but what i feel is completely riduclous is the fact that I might have a game this friday even though I dont have school!But i hear it is suppose to rain on Friday so we probably wont have the game . I am also scared because this thursday is open house and i dont want my parents to talk to my teachers Iam a fraid of what they might ask my teachers and what they might hear my teachers say about me... I hope my teachers dont say antyhing bad about me at open house. In chem class we did a cool lab on the block day about the phase changes it was fun we got to crush cans and blow up balloons it was fun and interesting. more next week.

relaxed week

I am so happy i got my progress report my parents weren't as mad as i thought they would be, they were somewhat upset about my math but when i explained that this didn't go on my record they calmed down. This week was alot more relaxed that the other weeks because it wasn't full of homework and there weren't as many quizzes or test. I am still always tired because of my sports and music but what ever ill just have to deal with it the year is almost over anyway. In chem class we are now learning about boiling points, pressure, energy, and phase changes, it is kinda complicated i feel really lost i just hope i understand it by the time we have to take the test. I'm really nervous i have to get on top of my grades!!!

A crazy week

I just got my test back i didn't do as bad as i thought i did but i didn't do great either. I still don't know what i got on the history test but i have more confidence on that test then i did on the chemistry test.I am also stressing out because I know my progress report is coming in this weekend and my math grade isn't the best I'm afraid of what my parents will do. I also am stressing out because it seams like school is getting so hard and everything is being rushed and going by to quickly I guess its because the year is almost over and that start testing is coming up. This week was crazy I had allot of quizzes and so much homework and on top of that I had allot of practices and games ... we won all the games but when i get home I am so tired and i don't feel like doing my homework, I do stay up and do it but when i wake up for band the next morning I am exhausted. more next week!

RXN and stoich TEst!!

The Rxn and stoich test was very hard it had allot of problems that were long and took me more time than i anticipated, the test was worth 100 and we were given a chance for extra credit. I also think this test came off allot harder for me than other tests because I had two test on the same day which made it hard for me to study as much as i wished to. The other test i had today was in history it was really easy, i think it was easy for me because I am kinda good at history.
A long with the test we took to day we had to turn in our yellow packet which was allot harder then i thought it would be. And on top of that it was the end of the 6 week grading period which is causing me allot of stress. more blogs next week.

My first game

Our first game was against Hillsdale even though we lost by one it was still a lot of fun to play against them.They were a very good team but i wasn't to big a fan of their field. Their field made the balls spin and bounce a lot faster and farther. The final score was 5 to 6 Hillsdale beat us by one point which was scored at the last inning of the game. I am proud to say that I made a good hit to center field. More blogs next week.

Softball

This week softball started I am soo tired I hope i make the team. I also have to work on my grades my math grade is the lowest and if I don't pull it up I might not make the team and that would be horrible. I also have a rally today and a basketball game I am going to be exhausted good thing I have a 3day weekend I am going to do so many thing over this weekend since I was in Disney last weekend. i also cant wait for the weekend because it is Valentines day on sunday its gonna be a blast!! And I am probably going dress shopping for formal this is going to be a great weekend!! More blogs next week.

Disneyland

I just came back from Disneyland it was the best trip ever we rode all of the rides. Stood up hecka late and had a lot of parties. The best part of the trip was how I made new friends or made a better bond with the friends i already had. I also liked riding the rides and taking funny pictures that was the best. Tho it was rainy and the park closed early that didnt keep us from having a good time. The best ride was the tower of terror that was soo much fun i was sreaming so loud and took a great pic on that ride. I also liked Space MOuntian that was fun because it was a rollercoaster in the dark and it was so fast. But this week of school was horrible I am soo tired. More blogs next week.

week after test

I didnt do too bad on my test, I got a B. I thought it was really hard, I think we need more review on or materials. I also think that we should do more like problems on the bord where every step is explained to us so that their is no way that we dont understand it. Now we are learning about a balancing equations it is even harder than what we learned last week. Test week

I am so stressed Im not sure if I get the material we are learning in school well enough tob tested on it. I hope I am going to do well on this test because I dont want my grade to drop.
I have been studying all week so I hope my grade will reflect on my efforts. The test is on pH and solutions.This week is very busy for m beacuse I need to do a poetry project over the weekend and I have waterpolo tournament over the weekend. More blogs comming next week.

2nd week ok school

It is only the second week back from break and I am exausted. School is so boring I would rather be at home on break or going out and having fun but not trapped in a class room. In chemestry we are learning more on solutions and solubitlity. I dont understand it at all i hope that when it comes to the test I can do good because I am soo scared.I have to study alot for this test I have a feeling im not going to do to good.
